Roving Networks Announces Low Power Complete Wi-Fi Module
Los Gatos, California, Dec 1, 2010 – Roving Networks, a leading provider of wireless solutions
announced the RN-171, its latest ultra-low power Wi-Fi module. The new module complements Roving Networks’ line of full-featured Wi-Fi modules that are small scale, completely configurable with on-board TCP/IP stack and networking functions. With a list price of $29.00 and a volume price of $19.95 @ 1,000 pieces, the RN-171 opens new markets for embedded Wi-Fi devices.
Measuring 26 x 18 x 3.1mm the RN-171 is 34% smaller than its predecessor, the RN-131. The RN-171 is a comprehensive networking solution that includes a 2.4 GHz radio, baseband processor and a host of networking application features. No external processor or driver is required, significantly reducing customers’ integration and development effort. The output power is configurable from 10dBm to 0dBm. Multiple antenna options provide the flexibility for on-board PCB trace, chip, wire, or external U.FL connector.
“The RN-171, the latest module in our WiFly product family, is built upon our proven 802.11 b/g silicon,” explained Mike Conrad, Founder and CEO of Roving Networks. “Its small size and low power is perfect for battery-powered applications such as remote sensors and asset tracking devices.”
The RN-171 is a standalone, wireless networking device that supports UDP, TCP, DNS, DHCP, ARP, ICMP, and HTML client. The module is an industrial (-45°C to +85°C) grade temperature range part. The RN-171 hardware interfaces include 10 bidirectional IO and 8 analog inputs, UART with data rates up to 921Kbps TX, 500Kbps RX, and SPI slave with up to 2.5 Mbps data rate. The on-board hardware crypto engine supports Wi-Fi authentication for WEP-128, WPA-PSK (TKIP) and WPA2-PSK (AES). The RN-171 module is FCC, IC, EN and Wi-Fi alliance certified.
Samples are currently available from Roving Networks. General release throughout Roving Networks’ extensive worldwide distribution network will be Jan 1st 2011. Go to http://rovingnetworks.com/buynow.php for a complete list of Roving Networks’ distribution partners.
